Tonight I watched The Secret, again. It’s a movie about The Law of Attraction. The reason I wanted to watch it is because I’ve been in a funk lately and last time I was in a funk, this movie did some great stuff to brighten up my outlook; I applied some of the methods that were talked about in the movie and had a great time doing it.
I’d like to revisit those good feelings by taking a deeper look at what they were talking about in the movie. In fact, I’d like to break it down into outline form and share my notes with everyone. This will benefit someone in addition to myself -that someone could be you! Open up and lets see what happens.
According to the movie, the Law of Attraction has basically three steps (ask, answer, and receive) for it to work. I’m going to investigate each one individually while keeping in mind the suggestions from the movie.
Step 1 – Ask
This is where you think about what it is that you want. You don’t have to verbally ask the open air for what you want; asking is where you figure out what it is that you want and then think about it. Simple right? Go ahead, flip through “the universe’s catalog” and pick out what you want, who you’d like to be, where you’d like to be, and all that other stuff. Shop around, pick out stuff you’d really like!
Stop thinking about what you don’t want, and start thinking about what you do want. Ignore all the bad stuff: don’t dwell on it and don’t give it your attention. Give your attention to what you want.
There’s more than enough of everything so don’t limit yourself in your choices. Yes, you can be a billionaire; yes, you can have that car; yes, you can have that person in your life; yes. Yes, you can. Don’t worry about the how (step 2), all you have to do is pick out what you want and receive it.
Step 2 – Answer
This complimentary step is where [the universe/God/energy/whatever] creates the map to your goal and presents them to you as opportunities/paths/steps to take and this awesome service is provided to you free-of-charge. This step doesn’t require any action from you, but it does require some inaction (faith/trust/belief) -you have to make sure that you don’t try to control the aspects of this step.
“How long is it going to take me to get the stuff I want?”
Don’t try to put time constraints on God and don’t make due dates for the universe. THIS IS NOT YOUR DOMAIN. All you do is steps 1 and 3. Let Step 2 happen in it’s own good harmonious timing, and just trust it and have faith that [universe/God/energy/whatever] will take care if this part. Yes, at first, you’ll pretty much be flying blind and relying completely on faith/trust. Don’t fight it. Trust it and know that it is being taken care of. Your path will present itself as you go.
If you want to call “it” God, and you’re all for the Biblical point of view, you might remember the scripture(s) that said “ask, and ye shall receive“.
Sometimes you’ll feel inclined, as if someone is nudging you, to do something that’s related to what you asked for. When you get that nudge, go on and do it. Grab those good feelings and leave all your doubt in the dust. “Follow your bliss” and ride on the party road and don’t worry about your dim headlights that only let you see so far – just know you’re there at your destination, feel those good feelings, and GO GO GO! with a smile on your face. You don’t need the map to your destination because you’ve got your trusty compass (step 3). Feel free to engage in random laughter and thankfulness all the way to your destination.
Step 3 – Receive
Here we go! This is the part where you do whatever you can to create the feelings of having it (whatever you asked for) right now. Failing that, at least make sure you feel good! This will encourage better thinking.
Your feelings are the knee-jerk reactions that result from your thoughts! You can use those feelings as a compass-like tool to guide you in the right direction; when you get a bad feeling, that’s your signal to change your thinking, and when you get a good one you know you’re on the right track. You could check your compass periodically by asking yourself how you feel right now.
According to the movie, there’s basically just good feelings and bad feelings. Some good feelings might be passion, happiness, enjoyment, acceptance, and more. Some bad feelings could be anger, worry, and more. The better you feel, the more in alignment you are with your goal; the worse you feel, the more out of alignment you are. It makes perfect sense that one should try and always feel the good feelings, plus it just makes things a whole lot more fun anyway. Imagine if you were ecstatic and happy all the time. That’s your signal that you’re well on your way to where you’d like to go -actually, you’re already there.
Ways to create, for example, the feelings of having that new car would be to go out and test that car, watch videos of people driving that car, visualize yourself driving that car, feel like you own that car right now, blog about it, etc. I’m sure you can come up with some ideas for creating those good feelings for what you want.
WARNING: There’s one MAJOR pitfall and it’s called DOUBT
“Most people offer the majority of their thought in response to what they’re observing.” It’s easy to only see your current situation and how much you don’t like it, but doing that will hold you back! You’re giving too much attention to your current state of affairs, and when you’re offering up all that thought to something you’re going to get more of it. You don’t want more of it (the bad stuff) do you?
Instead of doubting and beating yourself up over the “how am I going to get there”, think of your current state as old leftover bones reminiscent of what you’ve already overcome and offer the majority of your thoughts to what you do want. Know you’re there -hold onto that feeling and enjoy yourself! As far as your current state goes, “that’s not who you are, that’s who you were”.
“Ok I get it, but now I’m wondering what’s my purpose in life.”
There’s no blackboard in the sky that has your purpose in life written on it. We have been left to our devices to choose and pick whatever floats our boat. If you pick something and you change your mind down the road, keep moving forward and do that new stuff that makes you happy.
“Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors for you where there were only walls.” -Joseph Campbell
If you don’t know what makes you happy yet, go out and do/learn/try stuff! When you catch yourself smiling and feeling great, BAM that’s where your bliss is, or at least some of it. Do more of that stuff!
“Be easy about this. Have fun with it. There is nothing you are supposed to do, only that which you want to do.” -Esther Hicks, The Secret
I like the movie
This movie/tutorial does a great job of putting eye candy and a soothing soundtrack to ideas and methods that have been around for a long time. That’s why I like it. I like it the same way I like youtube. Videos are cool, no? You could just as well read a book on all this stuff or read it in blogs, but with a movie you can sit back on your couch, eat dinner, drink a cola, and recline your soul while learning and getting inspired.
